Ice Cream Sculpting

1/13/10

We saw this idea on Sugardoodle.net and knew we wanted to do this with our girls. What a fun idea! We started off with our spiritual message before we pulled out the ice cream. Sis. Bowman shared a story with the girls about when her father had a stone fire place built in their home. She said how fascinated he had been with watching the stone cutter work. The stone cutter would pick through stones very carefully & chisel away just so. He would throw out stones that looked perfectly fine to her father, but not to the stone cutter. The finished fireplace became a masterpiece and focal point in the room. The stone cutter had cut the stone in such a way that when the light hit it, it would sparkle brilliantly. She made the comparison of how we are like the stone & our Heavenly Father & Savior are like the stone cutter. Heavenly Father knows our potential & sees the brilliance that we have within in us. By cutting out the imperfections & flaws in our own lives, we are able to shine more brightly. (That was my short version of her message...)

Then, we told the girls we would be practicing our own "sculpting" skills by sculpting ice cream. We had the activity in the kitchen at church. I had platters that I froze for the girls to do their sculpting on, to keep the ice cream as cold as possible. We had an array of candies for the girls to decorate with. I bought a tub of ice cream, cut it into pieces, wrapped them in Saran wrap, & put them back in the freezer.Let's begin:The ice cream was solid! And yummy... :)Getting our 'sculpting' on:We had the older girls come & judge our creations:I made prize ribbons with different categories on them:Ta da! Our masterpieces:What would a picture be like without my mouth open?Sis. Bowman put 2 heart gummy candies on her snowbears rump...lolThis was my interpretation of the translation of the golden plates. Get it? Half the golden plates & half the Book of Mormon.Yes, that is me stuffing a YW's face in the ice cream:Pretty in pink...pink lips that is:My tongue was funky because of the food coloring on my sculpture...dumping the ice cream with my hands:It was a great activity & fun was had by all!
