Mission Possible! Scavenger Hunt

10/7/09

The 1st combined young women activity we were in charge of, we decided to do a photo scavenger hunt. We got this idea from the sugardoodle website, where they had ideas for service scavenger hunts. We decided to make ours focused around Personal Progress. The list of items they had to take pictures with/doing all related to a YW value. Some you had to use your imagination to make the connection, but it worked.

Here are the invitations we handed out to the girls: We put them in a manila envelope that said "Top Secret" on it & gave the envelope to one of the men at church. He had on a suit (obviously) & we had him put on a pair of sunglasses. We told him when we stand up to announce what we're doing on Wed. night to interrupt us with a "Top Secret Assignment." After, he gave us the envelope with our 'assignment' he left & we read the invitation out loud to the girls. They kept asking what we were doing, but we wouldn't tell them! Hello - Top SECRET! =)When they came on Wed. night, we quickly put them in their groups, gave them their assignments & said "GO!" All of our instructions were written down, & we gave another slip of paper for all of the adult 'drivers' so we didn't have to explain anything. The race was on!

Faith: Take a picture with the SaviorWe thought we were smart by combining a ton of the items into one picture. We wanted to get back 1st - which we did. Unfortunately, we get pts. for EACH picture, so that put us behind in pts. because we didn't have as many pictures as the other teams. I didn't really think that one through! So the 2nd team that arrived, won.Choice & Accountability - Take a picture with a traffic sign, doing what it says.Individual Worth - take a picture of the entire team on a slide at the same time.Divine Nature - take a picture of the group doing the "Charlie's Angels" pose.Virtue - take a picture trying on a modest dress, extra points if the dress is a prom/wedding dress.Choice & Accountability - take a picture of the group doing hand stands.Divine Nature - take a picture wearing a blue hat.Virtue - take a picture spelling out the word 'Pure'Knowledge - take a picture reading the scriptures.Knowledge - take a picture with a calculator.Integrity - take a picture of the Monkey's: 'Hear no evil, Speak no evil, & See no evil.'Integrity - spell out the word 'Honest.'Faith - take a picture of a YW falling back & another YW catching her.Knowledge - take a picture with someone in uniform (this one is hilarious)Good Works - Milk a 'cow' (lol)Individual Worth - take a picture of your team crammed in a buggy/cartGood Works - take a picture doing an act of service for a stranger.Good Works - take a picture of a YW pushing another YW on a swing.Integrity - take a picture in front of the church sign.
We had so much FUN!!!! When we came back, we told the girls they had just got finished completing a mission. We asked them how it went & some of the things they did. Then, we told them Heavenly Father had sent each of us here for another 'mission' which was very important. We talked briefly about what that mission is & how PP helps make that mission Possible! By using PP in our lives, we are developing the skills & testimony that we need to return to live with Him some day. (This took about 5-8 min.) We tallied the score sheets. Then, we had little boxes, stuffed with value colored tissue paper & filled with candy for the winning team.We had the drivers/photographers email the pictures to one of the leaders to show at our YW in Excellence night. I only have the pictures from my group & Sis. Bowman's group, but the pictures were too funny to see what the girls did. We had some try on Halloween costumes at Target or drive to a member's house to get pictures. They were very creative!

And We Dwelt in a Tent...

9/23/09

We had a new convert in our Beehive class & a few other girls that were having a little trouble understanding how to find their way through the scriptures. So we thought we would do an activity that would help them understand scripture study in a fun & helpful way.

We thought it would be fun for the girls to wear their PJs to the activity. We gathered in Sis. Bowman's living room for a spiritual thought before we began. I told the girls the story of Lehi & his family's journey in the wilderness & how his sons had to return to Jerusalem to get the plates of brass from Laban. I explained that the plates of brass was THEIR scriptures. We talked about how & why it was so important for them to get the plates & how important our own scriptures are for us today. This whole discussion/devotional took about 5-8 min. It wasn't very long. Then, we told the girls we were on our own journey & we needed the scriptures to guide us through the 'wilderness' of life.

We went up stairs where we had a tent set up in Sis. Bowman's play room. Inside the tent we had flashlights, so we could see our scriptures. We taught the girls how to use their scriptures as a tool. We showed them the bible dictionary, topical guide, the Old Testament (and what that covered), the New Testament, Book of Mormon, & Pearl of Great Price. We talked about different ways to read the scriptures...by topic, by chapters, by verse, etc. We talked about marking your scriptures. We showed them the Gospel Art Kit pictures & how on the back it had where to find the stories in the scriptures...this was another way to study the scriptures. It was lots of fun!Afterwards, we went back down stairs to have some refreshments...
